Open Your Mind And Your Jiu-jitsu Will Soar

Wednesday, December 20, 2023

Have you ever heard the saying, "Our minds are like parachutes, they work best when open"?

It's a powerful concept, one that I've come to truly believe in. And as I reflect on my journey in Jiu-Jitsu and life, I've come to realize just how essential an open mind is to achieving success and personal growth.

Throughout my journey, I've encountered a plethora of beliefs and information that were passed down to me. These teachings were handed to me by well-meaning mentors and authority figures, each with their own set of philosophies and techniques. However, as I delved deeper into the world of Jiu-Jitsu and personal development, I began to question the validity of these inherited beliefs and practices.

One crucial lesson I've learned is to evaluate information critically and be discerning about its source. It's not enough to blindly accept the wisdom of those who came before us. Instead, we must seek knowledge from individuals who have successfully applied their insights in practical ways.

Separating Fact from Fiction

To embark on this journey of open-mindedness, I first work on separating fact from fiction. This involves a thorough process of research and critical thinking. It's essential to invest time and effort into understanding the information before applying it to my Jiu-Jitsu practice or my life in general.

I also make it a point to investigate the origin of ideas. Just like the story of the turkey recipe illustrates, sometimes traditions and beliefs are rooted in circumstances that no longer apply. By understanding the origins, we gain insight into why certain practices were adopted in the first place.

The Turkey Recipe Lesson

Consider the story of the turkey recipe that has been passed down through generations. A little girl, curious about the practice of cutting the edges of the turkey before cooking, embarks on a journey to uncover the truth behind this tradition. Each generation had followed the same practice, assuming it was essential to the recipe.

However, the revelation comes when the great-grandmother explains that she initially had a small oven, and cutting the edges of the turkey was a necessity to fit it inside.

This simple yet profound story illustrates how unquestioning adherence to tradition can lead us astray. It serves as a reminder that just because something has been done a certain way for generations doesn't mean it's the best or most practical approach.

The Key Takeaway

As I reflected on the turkey recipe story, it became clear to me that I too had been guilty of blindly following practices and beliefs without questioning their validity. I had accepted them because they came from authority figures I respected. But the story served as a powerful reminder that an open mind is essential in our journey of growth.

In conclusion, the path to success in Jiu-Jitsu and in life hinges on keeping an open mind while also doing your homework. Challenge the status quo, question the beliefs you've inherited, and seek knowledge from those who have walked the path of success. By doing so, you'll not only improve your Jiu-Jitsu skills but also enhance your life in ways you never thought possible.

So, remember, open your mind, but always be willing to dig deeper and explore the origins of what you believe. This is the key to soaring in both Jiu-Jitsu and life.
